The New Outbreak
Indians' phones are being flooded with
misinformation. The battle against the coronavirus has many obstacles like- huge
crowds, a stretched & inadequate health system. Since the coronavirus
outbreak last December in China, misinformation, especially through WhatsApp, Facebook has risen too much. India is the biggest market for the Facebook-owned
messaging application, 'WhatsApp' with more than 50 crore users in a country
which had 56.8 crore smartphones.
In the midst of the lockdown in India people are spreading
misleading information and rumours about coronavirus. In
such difficult times, some mischievous people are posting, sharing or
forwarding fake news, misinformation and hate speech in society. Many people are
sharing old videos, mock drills, and even scenes from movies and unnecessarily
relating them to the virus. Dozens of people have been killed in public lynching’s
by angry crowds during the last four years over WhatsApp rumours that they were
child kidnappers. Since the outbreak of novel coronavirus in Central China's
Wuhan city, rumours and misinformation about the disease have been spreading,
even more quickly than the virus.
At last, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was
forced to appeal to citizens, asking them to not heed to rumours surrounding
COVID-19.
The following are some of the fake messages:
In the end, I would request you to avoid paying
attention to such fake news/messages and also do not forward them.
In such cases, police have taken immediate action
in different districts, states. Action has also been taken against the group
administrator and members.
Be a responsible and law-abiding citizen.
